Hit-&-Run Driver Strikes, Kills Teen With Stolen Car: Philadelphia Police

Kevin Maldonado was thrown 30 feet when a speeding Toyota Prius hit him along Old York Road Wednesday night. Police are still searching for the car and its driver. Thursday night, the 18-year-old’s father shared his last memory with his son with NBC10’s Brandon Hudson.

A suspect stole a vehicle, struck and killed a teen boy and then fled the scene Wednesday night in Philadelphia, police said.[[381487361, C]]

The 18-year-old victim, Kevin Maldonado, was trying to get into a car parked on Old York Road near Luzerne Street around 9 p.m. when he was struck by a white Toyota Prius, sending the teen 30 feet down the road and into a parked minivan, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. The driver then stopped on the 1300 block of West Pike Street, exited the vehicle and fled on foot, according to investigators.[[381466641, C]]

Maldonado was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later. Officials have not yet revealed his identity.

Investigators described the driver as a heavyset woman with long hair in a white floral-print dress.[[381592111, C]]

The car -- a 2010 Toyota Prius reported stolen from Lansdowne, Delaware County a few months ago -- was recently frequently seen in the area, said police.[[381604281, C]][[381593761, C]]

"I don't know why people just don't stop or come back... in many instances you're leaving a person there to die and its so sad and tragic, it's ridiculous," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross.
