A massive blaze broke out around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday at an abandoned building on North Front Street and West Girard Avenue.

“They fought the fire for about an hour and 36 minutes before it was under control,” said Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers.

The building also shut down SEPTA’s Market-Frankford El line between Huntingdon and Spring Garden. The line was reopened around 2:30 p.m.

Firefighter Dan Crawford, 53, suffered back injuries while fighting the blaze. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and released Tuesday night.

Licenses and Inspection say the building, owned by Tower Investment, has no history of violations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
