Should Police Body Cams Come Out of Storage, Be Put Into Use in Delaware

President Obama announced Monday that he wants to spend $75 million on police body cameras. NBC10’s Tim Furlong has the latest on why one Delaware police force still has their wearable cams in the box.

Delaware leaders are considering equipping state troopers with body cameras following the fatal shooting of an unarmed teenager by an officer in Ferguson, Missouri.

Gov. Jack Markell is planning to meet with the Delaware State Police and the Delaware branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. A spokesman for the governor said Markell is open to the idea.

A spokesman for Delaware State Police said the agency is researching the logistics and feasibility of body cameras.

The News Journal reports that Wilmington police have body cameras, but that they're sitting in storage for reasons that are unclear. And none of Dover's 93 officers wears a body camera.

Advocates say body cameras can both hold police accountable for their actions while protecting them from frivolous lawsuits.
