Defrocked Methodist Pastor Appealing Punishment

Frank Schaefer lost his job but not his voice.

Schaefer was defrocked by the United Methodist Church six months ago following a trial in southeastern Pennsylvania for officiating his son's same-sex wedding. He has since gained a following among reformers who want the nation's second-largest Protestant denomination to loosen its policies on homosexuality.

Schaefer has told his story dozens of times to largely sympathetic audiences around the country.
Though he doesn't regret the path he chose, Schaefer said he still wants the right to call himself a Methodist minister.

He's appearing before a church panel in Baltimore on Friday to argue his punishment was illegal under church law.
