Convicted Sex Offender, 76, Violates Probation: Courts

A 76-year-old convicted sex offender will spend three years in federal prison for violating his probation by attempting to speak with a 12-year-old boy who was on a field trip to Pittsburgh's Carnegie Science Center.

Sherwood Stevenson, of Independence, still faces state court charges of theft of services and giving police false identification because police say he sneaked into the museum then gave police false identity information after a teacher questioned the boy about the Feb. 4 encounter.

Stevenson pleaded guilty in 2011 to charges he fondling a 6-year-old boy on a Florida cruise and had been out of prison just two months when he approached the boy at the museum.

Defense attorney Steve Colafella said Stevenson needs treatment for bipolar disorder while he's in prison.
