12-Year-Old Shot by Brother in Strawberry Mansion, Police Say

A child has been shot in the chest in what was likely an accidental shooting on Sunday morning, officials said

A 12-year-old boy is recovering after being shot in the chest by his 10-year-old brother in a Strawberry Mansion home on Sunday. The child is suspected to survive, and police are investigating how the gun went off and how the 10-year-old had access to it.

Police are investigating after a 12-year-old child was shot in the chest at a home in the city's Strawberry Mansion neighborhood on Sunday morning.

On Sunday, police said a 12-year-old was found in the bedroom of the home along the 2600 block of N. Hollywood Street, at about 11:30 a.m. after he had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to officials, the boy was accidently shot by his 10-year-old brother.

"A 12-year-old child has just been shot by a 10-year-old sibling with a gun that was left unattended by an adult. Thankfully, the child is currently in stable condition. Tragedies such as these have an impact on everyone, from the immediate family to the community, and everyone in between: siblings, parents, grandparents, friends, teachers, doctors, police officers, and neighbors. Our thoughts are with the survivors," Danielle Outlaw, the City's police commissioner said in a statement.

Officials have said they have recovered the firearm.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where he has been listed in stable condition.
