Fatal Fire at Suburban Home

A woman was home alone when her Springfield Township home went up in flames Saturday night. She was killed in the fire that officials say was a challenge to fight because of the recent snow and ice. NBC10’s Na’eem Douglas reports.

A fire at a suburban Philadelphia home turned deadly Saturday, when crews were unable to reach a resident trapped inside.

The blaze broke out on the first-floor of a house on the 300 block of E. Leamy Avenue in Springfield, Delaware County just after 8 p.m. Saturday, according to officials.

A neighbor was one of the first people on the scene.

"Before I could even finish saying, 'Is anybody in there,'" said Vito Guardavaccaro, "My throat was cut off of air."

A female resident died in the intense fire, which took 75 firefighters nearly 30 minutes to contain.

Authorities say the snow and ice made it difficult to fight the flames.

Fire crews are still investigating the cause.
