The New Jersey Supreme Court is expected today to issue the next ruling in a long-running legal battle on how much affordable housing each of the state's towns must provide.
Affordable housing advocates and builders are suing the state over a policy that ties the towns' housing obligations to how much a community develops. They say towns may prevent virtually all new development to avoid having to accept low-income housing.
The state says the system is fair.
The case represents continuing fallout from a 1983 state Supreme Court ruling that found each town had an obligation to use zoning laws to give low- and moderate-income people a chance to live in their communities.
The ruling is expected to be released late Thursday morning.
