85-Year-Old in Critical Condition After Being Hit by Car in Fox Chase

An elderly woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car as she walked to get her morning coffee with a friend. The driver of the car is talking with police for questioning. NBC10’s Pamela Osborne has more details about what police and friends are saying about the accident.

Out for her morning walk to get coffee, an 85-year-old woman was hit by a driver on the 8000 block of Pine Road in the Fox Chase neighborhood of North Philadelphia early Monday morning.

Mabel Stottler was taken to a local hospital and treated for fractures in both legs, police said. She is in critical condition.

Friends of the 85-year-old told NBC10 she was out doing what she does every morning - going to Dunkin' Donuts for breakfast.

"She comes real early and I noticed she wasn't here," Juanita Darden, Stottler's friend, said while sipping coffee and blinking back tears. "She was a good person - keep me laughing, keep me up."

Her walker remained on the sidewalk as police attempted to piece together what happened.

The driver, 24, stopped a few feet away from the point of impact and called officials after the accident. He told them he hit a deer, but later realized it was an elderly woman.

Police are investigating whether the driver was intoxicated while driving.
