Deadly Gunfire at Del. Soccer Tournament

Five people were shot, one of them is dead.

What was supposed to be a fun day turned violent when five people were shot during an adult soccer tournament at Eden Park on New Castle Avenue in Wilmington, according to police.

The shoot out happened just before 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Police say three of the people playing in the tournament were shot -- a 16-year-old from Pike Creek who was shot in the head, a 47-year-old New Castle man who was shot in the chest, and a 34-year-old man from Baltimore who was shot in the shoulder. All three were taken to area hospitals.

It is not clear if the three victims were involved in the gun battle or if they were innocent by-standers.

Investigators say three suspects fled the scene in a car and were involved in an accident a short time later.

Two of the three suspects ran from the accident scene, according to police. They were apprehended in a vacant lot where they were hiding at B and Bradford Streets. Upon apprehension, they discovered a gunshot wound to the leg on one of the suspects.

The third suspect never left the car because he was shot multiple times at the park. He was later pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital.

Police continue to investigate the incident.

They have not released the names of the suspects.
