2 Delco Catholic Schools to Close for Good

It’s the end of an era for two Delaware County Catholic grade schools.

St. Philomena in Lansdowne and Our Lady of Charity in Brookhaven will close their doors for good when classes end in two weeks, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

Parishioners and parents were notified of the closings at emergency meetings held Tuesday night.

”This was an extremely difficult decision to make because of the impact on students, families and teachers,” Superintendent of Schools Mary E. Rochford told the Times.

School officials say that the closings are due to extremely low enrollment, reports the paper.

”We waited as long as possible in the hope that re-registration numbers would increase and that the schools could remain open next year,“ Rochford told the Daily Times.

That didn’t happen at either school and not enough students, means not enough tuition. And, of course, that means not enough money to run the parish.

The Delco Times says that an emergency meeting will also be held at St. Kevin in Springfield on Thursday night.
