A Seaside Heights man, who was displaced by Hurricane Sandy, was killed crossing the street to his hotel Sunday morning. It’s where he was staying after the storm forced him to leave his home and belongings behind. NBC10’s Katy Zachry spoke to the victim’s family.
A 36-year-old pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning when he was hit by two vehicles in an accident on Route 73 in Maple Shade.
Police in Burlington County say it happened shortly after 1 a.m. on the northbound side of Route 73 near Route 38. The victim is identified as 36-year-old Thomas Lewis of Seaside Heights, NJ.
Lewis was temporarily living at a Maple Shade motel after being displaced from his home following Hurricane Sandy.
He is survived by his son, parents and nine siblings, who shared their memories of Thomas with NBC10's Katy Zachry.
"Whatever he was going through being displaced by Hurricane Sandy and going through all that tragedy, he had the most positive spirit," said Lara Lewis, sister.
The Maple Shade Police Department and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the accident.
Lewis' girlfriend who was with him at the time of the crash says the first car who hit him did not have their headlights turned on. Police cannot confirm that.

Investigators say both drivers are cooperating and they haven't made a decision yet on whether they will face charges.
