Big Pay-out for Fans that Burn-up

A West Chester-based company will pay a $500,000 fine over fires and other problems caused by its defective fans.

U.S. safety officials say Lasko Products did not promptly report complaints that its fans were overheating, smoking and catching fire.

The problem led to nine injuries and property damage.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says Lasko received 42 related complaints from 2002 through 2005. The company did not fully report the problems until September 2005.

Lasko sold the box and floor fans involved from 2000 to 2004 under the brand names Lasko, General Electric, Galaxy and Air King.

The fans were recalled in 2006.

Lasko denies that it knowingly violated the law.
