Underground Fire in Center City

Smoke escaped from a manhole cover in Center City overnight due to an underground fire. PECO reports that it was not a transformer fire and no power outages were reported.

Firefighters responded to reports of smoke rising from a manhole in Philadelphia early morning Friday.

A fire broke out underground at 15th and Sansom streets in Center City around 12:30 a.m., according to officials.

Crews were able to get the blaze under control quickly.

The location of the fire led PECO workers to evaulate power lines in the area for damage. No power outages were reported.
