The Film Festival Welcomes You

Friday
Cinematic Wonders: After last night's bravura opening ceremony, the 2011 Philadelphia Film Festival is officially upon us. Tonight begins the full schedule of films, including Michel Hazanavicius' much-heralded silent film The Artist and Steve McQueen's controversial sex-addiction drama Shame. $12 Showtimes vary.

Saturday
Disarmed: It's been a few years since their heyday back in the '90s, but Smashing Pumpkins can still pack a wallop with their forceful live sets. They play tonight at the beautifully ornate Tower Theatre. $52-$79.75 7 p.m.

Sunday
Dums the Word: Rocketing up the indie charts for a while now, the plaintive vocals and hazy orchestrations of the Dum Dum Girls have managed to catch a small but potent piece of the zeitgeist. Check them out tonight in the confines of Philly's newest music venue, Union Transfer. $12-$15 8 p.m.

Going out can be a gamble, so why leave it up to chance? Stack the deck every Friday by peeping Play's Weekend Bender.
