Since February 24th, the inaugural Blindspot festival has been delighting Philly audiences by showcasing experimental music and dance performances in unconventional spaces. Last night, The Dufala Brothers -- perhaps better known as the founding members of local mad-cap indie outfit Man Man -- kept things quirky, playing a pipe organ concert in the historic Christ Church (one of two venues used during the festival).
The lights were turned off and ticket holders sat hushed in pews while the duo filled the vaulted space with an equal mix of playful and solemn sounds. But the boys didn't limit themselves to the 80-year old organ, choosing to enhance their set with pots and pans, kazoos, saxophones, drums, and even their own falsettos and baritones. Considering that the performance artists have done everything from organize a toilet-trike race across Old Town to drive a cardboard tank during rush hour, their unconventional show last night was anything but surprising.
Thankfully, there are still three more nights left of Blindspot, which runs though March 6th. On Friday, you can catch Christ Church's newest musical director Parker Kitterman, who brings his late Renaissance and early Baroque stylings to the table; Saturday, Sun Ra Arkestra members Marshall Allen and Farid Barron combine keys and sax (we wouldn't miss this one); and Sunday, it's multi-instrumentalist and MacArthur fellow John Zorn closing out the festival with a solo organ performance.
