Section of A.C. Boardwalk Collapses

A portion of Atlantic City‘s historic boardwalk collapsed into the ocean Monday. The day after, residents say this section of the famous landmark has been falling apart for years and something must be done about it.

A section of the world-famous Atlantic City Boardwalk collapsed into the water Monday.

The northeast inlet section of the boardwalk is located past the casinos.

"It's a danger to the environment," said resident Michael Aldridge.

"To have this looking like this... is just a total disgrace."

The area where the collapse happened was part of the wooden walkway that was already off-limits.

Officials hope to remove the collapsed section of wooden walkway within a couple weeks.

"It's just another part of Atlantic City decaying away," Aldridge said.

The deteriorating part of the walkway where the collapse happened was closed more than a decade ago, residents said.

"It's something that needs to be taken care of," said city public works director Paul Jerkins.

Officials were looking into tides and other factors so that they could start to take down part of the deteriorated boardwalk, Jerkins said.
