13 Year-Old Saves Cousin From Drowning

A Middle School Student is being hailed as a hero for saving his cousin’s life.

13-year-old Antonio Cruz who rescued his cousin Rosa Perez from drowning in May, is honored at a press conference at Lakeside Middle School today.

The boy, a Millville resident, last month received the New Jersey Outstanding EMS Action by a Youth award, which is given once a year.

"You have to be nominated for the award, and he won out of all the people put forth from all over the state," said Tammy Tisa, a Millville Rescue Squad facilitator.

Tisa declined to give the name of the boy or the details on how he resuscitated his cousin following a near-drowning incident.

"The details will all be given at the press conference," she said.

The boy was given the state award on Oct. 3.

On May 2, a 22-year-old woman was pulled from Union Lake after being submerged for nearly 5 minutes.

According to police, a family member rescued her from the water and resuscitated her using CPR.

The woman was later flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, in Atlantic City.

However, Tisa would not confirm this was the same family member the 13-year-old had rescued.

Today’s press conference featured the award recipient, Millville Rescue Squad, Underwood Paramedics, a South Star helicopter, Millville police, Lakeside school officials and local representatives.
