Winter Storm Brings Heavy Rain, Some Snow

Winter Weather Advisories and Flood Watches in effect for a large part of the region

The second winter storm of the season arrived in our area shortly before noon Wednesday and  this one has the potential to be severe in parts of the region Wednesday into Thursday.

Snow started sticking in Chester, upper Montgomery and Berks Counties as well as the Lehigh Valley around 11:45 a.m. and shortly after in parts of Philly. It gradually changed to sleet or freezing rain, and then to rain as temperatures went up by this evening.

Temperatures will rise into the 40s overnight. Some light rain will be left over for the a.m. rush but no icy conditions are expected.

The damage was done at Philadelphia International Airport where hundreds of flights were either canceled or delayed leaving passengers stranded.

Here are advisories and what to expect across the region:

A High Wind Warning is in effect in Ocean County until 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Expect wind gusts up to 60 mph. The impact of high winds may result in downed trees which could cause scattered power outages. Minor property damage is also a possibility.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Kent, Sussex, Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May Counties as well as the Delaware Beaches until 1 a.m. Expect winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

There was also flooding down the shore including West Atlantic City where water flooded onto some streets.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for New Castle, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Northwestern Burlington, Delaware and Philadelphia from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday morning

A Heavy Rain, Wind and Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect in Brick Township, N.J. from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday. The storm could bring 1 to 3 inches of rain. Residents in all areas East of Old Hooper Avenue and Princeton Avenue, East of Beaver Dam Road, are strongly encouraged to make preparations and evacuate the area prior to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Brick Township Office of Emergency Management. Residents are also encouraged to move their vehicles to higher ground.

A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect in the Poconos from noon Wednesday until Thursday at noon as 4 to 8 inches of snow and possibly ice, according to the National Weather Service. The Warning is also in effect during that time period for several parts of Lehigh Valley.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton Counties from noon Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday as a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain is expected, the National Weather Service reported.

A Flood Watch is in effect Wednesday night through Thursday morning for most of the I-95 Corridor as heavy rain -- up to 2 inches could be expected in some suburbs --  falls on many area counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Speed restrictions: The speed limit on I-476 from Mid-County to Clarks Summit and on Interstates 78, 80 and 81 was reduced to 45 mph due to the winter storm. Drivers should use caution or not travel unless it necessary, according to officials.

Along I-78 a tractor-trailer crashed and wound up hanging off an overpass before it was removed.

Gusty winds were the story especially down the shore where gusts above 50 mph were reported.

The storm should begin to clear on Thursday however and we're in for plenty of sunshine on Friday.

Another storm is expected to hit on Saturday. The track of this one means more of the storm will be snow. As of Tuesday night, it doesn’t look like it will have as much moisture as Wednesday’s storm. It will also be moving quickly, so it is not likely to be a huge snowstorm.

But with the storm track moving just south of us, much of this storm could be snow, even in the Philly and the surrounding suburbs, with at least some accumulation.

Stay tuned throughout the week for updates.
