Winter Skin Blues – Winterize Your Skin

It’s a cold December day. And, with wind chills in the single digits this morning, I think it’s safe to say that it’s beginning to feel a (whole) lot like winter.

With winter officially arriving in just two weeks, on December 21, it’s a good time to start preparing for the bone-chilling months ahead.

We prepare our homes and cars for the winter so why not our own vehicle, right? So, here’s a short laundry list to avoid the winter-skin blues and keep us glowing through spring.

Moisturizer: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize -- not just your face but your body too.

Experts say that a good habit would be to slather on moisturizer right out of the shower when your skin is still wet. This helps to seal in the moisture to combat cracked, dry and rough winter skin. Olive oil also works for extra problem spots.

Lip Balm: The kisser should be protected too. Maybe choose a balm or lipstick that is brightly colored to get you through the dreary winter days.

Exfoliate: Use a gentle scrub to get rid of dry, flaky skin -- it's a good idea to do this in the shower or bath. A soft toothbrush can be used on the lips.

Sunscreen: Although we’re not lying around on the beach in a bathing suit, we are still soaking up the rays. Keep the sunscreen routine going, especially, as you spend time outdoors in the fresh white-bright snow.

Humidifier: Forced heat and fireplaces feel great after coming in from the cold but they can zap moisture from your skin. Instead, invest in a portable humidifier or, even simpler, place a bowl of water near heater vents to replenish moisture.
