All Rained Out

Heavy rains cause flooding in already waterlogged areas

Another day of heavy rain means another day of flooding across the area.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for most of the region including Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon. The warning expired at 4 p.m. for most of the area, but a Flash Flood Watch continued until the evening.

Flooding shut down the on and off ramps for I-95 at Broad Street around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. At about the same time, all lanes of Route 70 West, Kings Highway, in Cherry Hill, N.J. were blocked off because of flooding. They remained closed for more than an hour as the waters receded.

In Trainer, Delaware County, several cars were submerged after the waters quickly flooded streets and low-lying areas after the Stonybrook Creek breached its banks. One woman says she didn't realize how deep the water was when she drove her red Chevy through the deluge.

"All of the sudden I got stuck and then my car cut off," the woman named Monica said. She grabbed the two 2-year-olds strapped into her backseat and waded to safety.

"I just grabbed them, picked them up and walked with them," she said.

As much as 5-inches of rain fell in the past two days in some areas causing roads to flood and rivers and streams to surge.

The Schuylkill Expressway had to be closed Tuesday after the heavy rains turned the highly traveled roadway into a lake near the Conshohocken Curve.

The deluge also became dangerous and deadly on Tuesday as one man went missing and another was rescued from a raging Pennypack Creek.

Public safety officials continue warning people to stay away from rushing waters and drivers to not drive through standing waters. It only takes 2-feet of water to disable a car, officials say.
