A combination of humidity and hot temperatures brought powerful storms to the region, dumping rain and hail on what started off as a sunny weekend.
Nearly 40,000 PECO customers were without power Saturday afternoon. Those numbers slowly dwindled during the evening hours, but downed trees and flooding remained.
As of 11 p.m., nearly 15,000 people were still in the dark.
Severe weather was reported earlier Saturday in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Camden County, New Jersey, shortly after the First Alert went into effect at 3 p.m. Residents reported seeing pellets of hail battering patios, cars and homes.
Friday night, some quick-moving storms dumped hail in Montgomery County and soaked South Philly while causing 70mph winds.
Aside from the storms, the hot temperatures are a concern as they rise into the mid-90s in many areas. People should try to stay cool by drinking plenty of water, wearing loose clothing and limiting strenuous activities. Anyone outside should also apply sunscreen and then continue to reapply it every couple of hours to avoid burns.
