First Alert Weather: Oppressive Heat Feels Like Triple-Digits

Heat and humidity will combine again Wednesday to cause oppressive conditions for most of the Philadelphia region.

Humidity and heat are combining to create oppressive conditions for a second day in the Philadelphia region.

The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team has issued a First Alert for most of the region (with the exception of the Jersey shore) until 8 p.m. Wednesday for oppressive heat, with high temperatures feeling like the triple-digits.

“It was stinking hot Tuesday and it will be every bit as hot and as humid Wednesday, if not a little bit steamier,” NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley said. "From late Wednesday morning through the afternoon, feels-like temperatures will top 100 degrees."

Humidity could bring feels-like temps up to near 105.

“That’s 95 degrees in the shade, when you’re in the sun add 10 degrees to that,” Bill said. “Plus, the humidity on top of that and you have a real scorcher.”

It's a heat wave as temps move into the 90s for a third day in a row Wednesday. And, we will likely reach into the 90s again on Thursday, though conditions will not be as oppressive.

School’s Out:

The heat caused the Philadelphia School District to dismiss students at 1 p.m. Tuesday and again on Wednesday. After-school activities, including athletic programs and professional development sessions, are canceled.

On only their third day back in class, students in the Philadelphia School District are being let out early, again, because of extreme heat and humidity. These early dismissals are leaving people wondering if starting the year earlier was worth it.

Stay Safe in the Heat:

People should be sure to check on elderly or at-risk neighbors and limit their time outside. Drink lots of water and if you don’t have access to air conditioning during the day, find a public place with AC where you can cool off.

The oppressive heat “makes it more difficult for you to cool off and be comfortable and function properly,” Bill said. “So, that’s why you really need to take it easy.”

What’s Next:

The heat wave should break by Friday with dramatically cooler temperatures and highs in the 70s. As the heat comes to an end, the shower threat will be increasing. The first threat for scattered thunderstorms is late Thursday, and keep your umbrella handy through the Labor Day weekend.
