Brrrrrrrrr — Cold Week Ahead

Be ready to bundle up this week

Cold hard facts for Philadelphians as the work week starts -- cold weather is here to stay for a while even as wild winds start to calm down.

A very cold pattern that began about the middle of December continued as we started 2010.

Strong winds made it feel even colder this weekend due to a big storm off the Northeast coast combined with strong high pressure over the middle of the country. Gusts got up to 52 mph in Atlantic City Sunday and officially topped out at 45 mph in Philadelphia.

Wind chill readings were in the single digits over much of the area even during the afternoon Sunday. The temperature itself only reached 27 in Philadelphia.

As the ocean storm slowly weakens and moves away, the wind should gradually diminish. Monday should still be rather windy, with gusts up to 30mph, but not nearly as windy as the weekend.

Even when the wind diminishes the cold won’t be going anywhere.

The overall cold pattern should continue through the next week -- possibly lasting into mid-January.

High temps should remain in the 30s through the work week.
