Cold weather should return to the area this weekend after a two-week absence.
The January thaw ended Thursday. Arctic air was racing into the region with strong and gusty northwest winds, and by Friday morning, wind chills should be in the single digits.
That's just about as cold as it was at the beginning of the month in the heart of the last arctic blast. The very cold weather should last through the weekend, with temperatures in the teens at night and only into the 20s during the afternoon.
But, the cold spell shouldn’t last long and temperatures should return to normal, or above normal, by midweek.
The big storm moving through the southern states should mainly stay south of the area. The northern edge of the snow may reach areas just south of Philadelphia Saturday, but it should be on the light side.
