    Lightning Strike Scares Child Off Bike in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Leaving Him With Stitches to Mouth

    A 6-year-old boy hurt in the Lehigh Valley was startled by a nearby lightning strike while riding his bicycle.

    The incident played out as storm hit in the area of the 800 block of Argus Court in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Sunday night.

    NBC10 spoke to the boy, who was feeling better and out using his scooter Monday, and his family Monday.

    At first, adults who didn't see the incident believed the boy had been struck by lightning. But, they later discovered that he was actually startled by a nearby thunder clap that caused him to smash his face into the handlebar of his bike.

    Officials say the child was awake and responsive while being taken to the hospital where he received stitches to his mouth, his family said.

    Storm damage was reported in parts of Lehigh County with transformers exploding in Schnecksville and Trexlertown as well as downed wires in Salisbury Township.

    As part of Sunday’s storm some people in the Emmaus, Pennsylvania, area woke up Monday morning to storm damage and power outages.

    More storms are expected to hit the Philadelphia region, Philly suburbs and the Lehigh Valley Monday afternoon and evening. Heavy rain could cause flooding, damaging winds, hail and a possible isolated tornado as the storms move through into Tuesday morning.
