A strong storm system expected to hit our region on Christmas Eve will bring with it a lot of fog, heavy rain and gusty winds making your holiday travels a bit more dangerous and, of course, much slower -- prompting us to issue a First Alert.
We'll get a break from the rain this afternoon, making it the best time -- if you can manage it -- to travel to your holiday destination, especially you you're planning on driving or flying.
Rain, very heavy at times, will move in overnight Tuesday into Wednesday and with diminished winds, we'll see some very dense fog, said NBC10 chief meteorologist Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz. That rain will continue throughout Wednesday morning as will the foggy conditions. A strong thunderstorm is possible in Delaware and South Jersey.
Flight delays and low visibility on can be expected.
As the wind kicks back up Wednesday afternoon, the fog will become less dense making travel a little easier. Southwest winds will gust over 20 mph pushing the temperatures into the low 60s. That's about 20 degrees above normal for this time of year.
The rain will move out early Christmas morning, allowing a little sun to break through. Winds will whip over 35 miles per hour at times, the warmer temperatures will stick around. Christmas' high will be 54.
The rest of the week will be sunny and warm with highs in the low to mid 50s.
