Severe storms with heavy rain, lightning and powerful winds slammed the region on Wednesday, leading to flooding, water rescues and damage throughout our area.

A First Alert was in effect until midnight due to storms with blinding downpours, localized flash flooding, extreme lightning and damaging winds.

Flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for most of the area throughout the day, including Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs. The flooding led to water rescues throughout Montgomery and Delaware counties, including Ardmore, Gladwyne, Whitemarsh Township and Newtown Square.

The storms also caused downed trees, power outages and SEPTA delays. Passengers at 30th Street Station crowded around SEPTA service screens reporting that some trains were up to 99 minutes late.

The storms also caused more than 100 lightning strikes along the I-95 corridor, according to NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Krystal Klei.

Before the storms moved in, conditions were hot and humid with highs in the low 90s. A low pressure system then dragged a cold front across our area which triggered the storms.

The system finally moved out late Wednesday night.

Thursday will be seasonably warm with temperatures in the upper 80s and partly sunny conditions with a stray shower.

The Eagles preseason game kicks off that evening at Lincoln Financial Field. Conditions should be clear during game time with partly cloudy skies.

Friday will be partly sunny with highs in the mid-80s while the weekend will have much needed relief. Both Saturday and Sunday will be in the low to mid-80s with mostly sunny skies and low humidity.
