The NBC10 First Alert Weather Team has issued a First Alert for waves of thunderstorms packing the potential for damaging winds, downpours and hail Thursday evening.

The First Alert is in place through 7 p.m. for most of the region with the exception of the shoreline as strings of storms race across the area. A few of the storms could turn severe.

"Out of an abundance of caution we've issued a First Alert," NBC10 First Alert Weather meteorologist Bill Henley said. "We want people to know that there is a potential for damaging winds and hail from these storms."

Hail was reported around Harrisburg and State College. The Philadelphia area may also see hail, but it will depend on whether the storms stay strong as the sun sets.

Don't be fooled if it's sunny out or only lightly raining, as it could turn stormy quickly. The sun could also help fuel storms by heating up the air.

The first string of storms moved in around noon with stronger waves to follow in the afternoon. If conditions worsen be sure to seek shelter.

"If you hear thunder, if you see the lightning, take it seriously," Bill said.
