Swimmers are urged to use caution along the New Jersey shore and Delaware beaches as Hurricane Dorian moves up the East Coast.

The National Weather Service said there is a high rip current risk at New Jersey and Delaware beaches through at least Thursday evening. Swimmers are advised to stay out of the ocean.

"Stay out of the surf," the weather service said. "If you are ever caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."

Dorian is forecast to pass by well offshore Friday. However, forecasters say gusty onshore winds are anticipated and some coastal flooding is possible.
