At 12:35 p.m., a driver spotted a vehicle in a wooded area between I-95 southbound and the ramp to St. Rt. 141 northbound in Newport, Delaware. Responding state troopers found a 1996 Honda Accord occupied by Kristy Long, 39, of Wilmington, and her 1-year-old daughter.

Long, who police say was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter, who was also properly restrained, was taken to duPont Hospital for Children where she was treated and released for a minor injury. She is currently staying with relatives.

Investigators believe Long was traveling south in the right lane of I-95 southbound at the exit for St. Rt. 141 northbound. Instead of following the lane to the right onto the off ramp, investigators say the vehicle continued straight, leaving the roadway and driving into a wooded ditch where it crashed against bushes and small trees.

Investigators believe the vehicle was discovered a few hours after the crash occurred.

The ramp from I-95 southbound to St. Rt. 141 northbound was closed for around two hours before it was reopened.

Officials continue to investigate the crash.
