Red Light Camera Support Declines as Safety Concerns Rise

A new survey shows declining support for red light cameras in New Jersey.

AAA spokeswoman Tracy Noble said 56 percent of New Jersey motorists surveyed believe the cameras are a good way to reduce crashes at intersections. That's a 21-point drop from a 2007 poll that was taken before the cameras began operating.

"We are assuming that now since we are in the fifth year of the red light camera pilot program in the state more people have been caught by the cameras. So their approval rating has dropped as the camera usage has increased."

In February Brick Township became the first New Jersey town to stop the use of the red light cameras after the mayor said he was not convinced they improved safety.

The pilot program that allows their use in 24 other municipalities will end in December, and it's not clear if the legislature will extend it.

Opponents say they're just a scam to increase local revenue.
