Uber Considering Service in Wilmington, Delaware

Wilmington's mayor says ride-sharing service Uber is considering operating in the city.

Mayor Dennis P. Williams said Thursday that he met with Uber officials two weeks ago. WDEL first reported Williams' remarks.

Riders use Uber's smartphone app to seek out independent drivers using their own cars. Uber does not own the vehicles or employ the drivers but instead partners with them and takes 20 percent of their earnings.

Williams says it's time for an open competition, and says it can be difficult to find a cab in Wilmington.

The mayor says he hopes Uber will be operating in Wilmington early in 2015.
