Car Slams Into SEPTA Bus, 2 Hurt

A car slammed into the back of a SEPTA bus overnight sending the drivers of both vehicles to the hospital.

“The Chevy Impala that struck the rear of the SEPTA bus left at least 100 feet of skid marks, I’m told by our accident investigation personnel,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. “(The car) clearly has very, very heavy front-end damage so we know that speed was definitely a factor in this accident.”

The force of the violent wreck at N Front Street and Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia’s Juniata neighborhood smashed in nearly the entire hood of the red sedan and it left the driver -- an unidentified 24-year-old man -- seriously hurt.

Philadelphia Police say the bus was stopped at a traffic light around 11:30 p.m. Monday when the car crashed into the back bumper.

The driver of the sedan was found unconscious after the crash with head and face injuries. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital in extremely critical condition.

None of the 10 passengers on the bus suffered injuries, the driver, however, was taken to Temple Hospital with neck and back pain.

The exact cause of the wreck remains under investigation. As of Tuesday morning there is no indictment that the driver was impaired.

Small said that surveillance video from the bus could help the investigation.

This wasn't the only serious crash in the city overnight. A man in his 30s suffered multiple injuries after he crashed his SUV into a SEPTA Market-Frankford El support beam and Kensington Avenue and E Cambria Street in the city's Kensington section.
