A big rig hauling glass containers caused a messy situation that closed the eastbound Pennsylvania Turnpike in Chester County for hours through the Friday morning commute and into midday.
The wreck occurred around 4:20 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike at milepost 314 between the Downingtown and State Route 29 interchanges in West Pikeland Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.
The truck driver wasn’t hurt.
The clean-up took hours as crews needed to remove broken glass from the highway. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission warned drivers that they would be detoured between the Downingtown (Exit 312) and Valley Forge (Exit 326) interchanges through the morning commute.
The turnpike tweeted, “the following detour is in effect: Route 100 south, to US Route 30 east, to US Route 202 north, to US route 76 west, re-enter at Valley Forge Interchange. Expect heavy delays."
Those delays ballooned to nearly an hour just before 9 a.m., Waze said.
