According to police on the scene, a Medic 25 ambulance was driving southbound when a car pulled out in front of it around 2:45 a.m. Investigators said it appeared the driver of the northbound car was speeding went he in the southbound lanes to avoid stopped traffic in the northbound lanes.

The driver of the car suffered head injuries and was rushed to nearby Temple University Hospital in critical condition. No medics were hurt and a patient in the back of the ambulance didn't suffer further injuries.

The crash left the roadway closed for nearly two hours.
