Kids Hurt When Family's SUV Crashes Off New Jersey Turnpike & Into the Woods

3 kids hurt after SUV overturns on Turnpike

An SUV has overturned in the woods along the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County, injuring four of the five people inside -- including three children.

New Jersey State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams says a family from New York was driving southbound on the Turnpike near exit 5 in Westampton Thursday when the accident occurred.

He says the three young children were not wearing seat belts and that one was ejected from the Hyundai Santa Fe after it overturned and struck a tree stump around 1 p.m. The three were taken to Cooper Hospital's trauma center. He says their injuries were not considered life threatening.

Williams says that the preliminary investigation found that the front passenger side tire malfunctioned before the accident.

He says that the two parents in the front of the SUV were not seriously injured.

Traffic slowly got by the crash as investigators searched for a cause.
