New Jersey Trooper Dies in Off-Duty Turnpike Crash

An off-duty auto accident claimed the life of a New Jersey state police trooper overnight.

The accident along the southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike near the Vince Lombardi rest stop in Ridgefield Friday killed Trooper Glenny Almonte.

Almonte was driving his Honda Accord at about 1:45 a.m. when he hit a curb and guiderail near the service area. The car then struck a tractor-trailer heading south. Medics rushed Almonte to Hackensack University Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead around 2:30 a.m.

"The loss of Trooper Glenny Almonte saddens the entire State Police family," said state police superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes. "We are offering support to Trooper Almonte’s loved ones as well as to all of our employees touched by this tragedy."

The 28-year-old was a 2013 graduate of the state police academy, assigned to the Totowa station.

The accident remained under investigation Friday afternoon.
