Federal mediators are pushing for a settlement in a contract dispute between Philadelphia's transit agency and two of its unions that earlier led to a one-day strike.
The National Mediation Board has asked the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and the unions to provide an update on contract talks during a hearing Monday in Washington.
The dispute centers on pay for SEPTA's train engineers. An emergency board appointed by President Barack Obama recommended last month that engineers get wage increases similar to other unions.
About 400 workers walked off the job one Saturday in June to protest the wages, shutting down regional rail lines that carry about 60,000 passengers daily.
If the board's recommendations do not lead to a deal, a second emergency board can be requested.
