Car Goes Off Route 55, Strikes Tree, Leaves Woman Dead

A Woman died after the car she was riding in swerved off a major South Jersey roadway and into the woods Wednesday morning.

Traffic slowly got by the scene of the deadly wreck along New Jersey Route 55 northbound near mile-marker 47 in Elk Township, Gloucester County around 7:20 a.m.

The passenger -- an unidentified woman -- died at the scene while medics took the unidentified female driver to Cooper University Hospital with undisclosed injuries, said New Jersey State Police.

As SkyForce10 hovered overhead a short time later, you could see the blue sedan in the woods as traffic backed up approaching the scene. There appeared to be tire marks from the roadway into the wooded area.

No word yet on what caused the driver to lose control.

It took crews more than three hours to clear the crash.
