Woman Dies, Man Hurt in Crash Near Northeast High School

A woman died and a man suffered injuries after a serious crash outside Northeast High School early Wednesday morning.

The force of the two-car crash along Cottman Avenue near Algon Avenue around 4 a.m. left a 21-year-old woman ejected from her car. She later died at Aria-Torresdale Hospital, according to Philadelphia Police accident investigators.

A 48-year-old man suffered a broken neck as was also rushed to Aria-Torresdale where he remained in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning, police said.

The wreck was so powerful that it forced a car onto the high school's front lawn.

Authorities told NBC10 that the woman appeared to be going west on Cottman and was possibly trying to turn onto Algon when the accident occurred.

The man wasn't wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was knocked unconscious when his head hit the windshield during impact, according to police.

Cottman Avenue remained closed in both directions between Summerdale Avenue and Whitaker Avenue as of 8 a.m.
