The Wonderful World of Beer

Philly Beer Week 2010 starts this weekend

Philly Beer Week 2010 kicks off on Friday and continues until Sunday, June 13.

Always a great time, this year won't disappoint. In fact, Beer Week has pumped up the volume from 679 events last year to 1000 events at almost 200 venues for 2010.

"Almost everything is new this year, except for the kick-off event, Opening Tap," says PBW representative Jennie Hatton.

Mayor Nutter will be tapping the first keg of PBW with the “Hammer of Glory” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The “Hammer of Glory” will start its journey in Mayfair and will be transported to the Independence Visitor Center by only non-motorized vehicles where it will be handed off to our Mayor.

Let the festivities begin.

On Saturday, there are three international events. The Philadelphia Global Beer Expo brings the best of non-local beers to Philly. The International Great Beer Expo highlights more than 100 beers from all over the world. And if you’ve always wanted to experience Oktoberfest, head to the German Bierfest for a day of outdoor German beer tasting.

“Beer culture in Philly is so incredible,” Hatton says. “It’s unlike anywhere else. Restaurants are all holding beer events instead of wine dinners,” according to Hatton.

Don’t miss the Forum of the Gods on Thursday, June 10 when a panel of some of the biggest names in beer will be open for answering all your burning beer questions.

Some other fun events include a dunk tank, a mechanical bull and an attempt to break a world record.
