Philly Bar Makes Gourmet Magazine's ‘Coolest' List

Last week, we learned that three Philly bars made a list of best beer bars in the nation. Turns out, we’ve also got a pretty cool oldie at which to get our hoppy-fix: McGillin’s Olde Ale House (1310 Drury St.) was just named one of the coolest old bars in the U.S. by Gourmet magazine—an exclusive list that included only 14.

So what makes McGillins so cool? We think it’s the history. McGillin’s is Philly’s oldest continuously operating bar, having first opened its doors in 1860. Add to that an eclectic and seasonal mix of brews from around the world, and you’ve got recipe for success. Oh, and the wings pretty much rock.

Gourmet cites McGillin’s “old-time character” and “lively, sometimes raucous” atmosphere as being the primary reasons for its coolness status. We can’t disagree.
