Just days before the kick-off of Fashion Week, the famed restaurant Elaine’s positively swarmed with stars from the worlds of film, fashion and New York society. At the center of it all was famed celebrity and nightlife photographer Patrick McMullan who was being honored last night by Interview magazine at a party celebrating their 20-year collaboration.
In a new Fashion Week partnership with nbcnewyork.com, Patrick will take you backstage and to the VIP parties, documenting his adventures in a series of exclusive videos.
Unlike the hordes of desperate paparazzi who regularly clamor to stand outside celebrity events and photograph the stars from afar, Patrick has always been an insider and a part of the party from the very beginning. You’ll never find him standing on the wrong side of the velvet rope – he is on the guest list, thank you very much.
And now you will be too.
As Andy Warhol once quipped, “If you don't know Patrick McMullan, you ought to get out more!" And on this night, anyone in doubt of Patrick’s popularity or longevity in the business need only scan the room at Elaine's to see the likes of Kimora Lee Simmons, Djimon Hounsou, Iman, Stephanie Seymour, Gayle King, Lydia Hearst, Charlie Rose, Mary McFadden, Liz Smith, Olivia Palermo and countless others chatting up, giggling with and hanging on the man of the hour.
Much of the evening's conversation focused on upcoming parties and fashion shows as New York’s social set gears up for Fashion Week. McMullan’s staff has already been weeding through the piles of invitations trying to decide which shows and parties he’ll be attending and documenting. As he makes his way through the madness, seven webisodes of “A Fashion Show with Patrick McMullan” will be featured this site along with galleries of his glamorous photos that will take you inside the tents and parties of Fashion Week.
At the end of the evening, Patrick seemed a bit rushed as he and his staff hopped in their car and sped off into the night, but everyone left at the party seemed to understand. After all, he has a lot of places to be and a lot of people to see. But this time, he’ll be taking us with him as he hits the hottest parties and sneaks inside the most fabulous shows.
Check back here throughout Fashion Week. You can't afford to miss it.
