The Second City Has “Nutterly Love”

The world-renowned Chicago improv troupe that has provided Saturday Night Live with most of its cast for the past 20 years gives Philly a personalized show this July.

The Second City comes to Philly next week with “Nutterly Love: Funny as a Bell.” The show premieres July 8 and runs through July 26 at the Suzanne Roberts Theater and it’s all about Philly.

But how, exactly, is a Chicago improv group putting on a comedy show all about Philly? The two head writers spent a three-day “Immersion Weekend,” which they document on the “Nutterly Love” blog. It consisted of having beer at Fergie’s in Center City, spending a day talking to politicians in City Hall, and eating their way from the Italian Market to Reading Terminal.

It’s not a mystery that they found comedy here when you see the video of residents’ opinions of their own city. One woman describes it as insane, drug-infested and having lots of murders. Yet when asked, “But do you love it?” she answers, “Absolutely.”

“This show is guaranteed to send you’s all marching to City Hall proclaiming yet another Philadelphia victory,” the comedy geniuses proclaim on their blog.
