The weekend recipe to beat the heat was to chow down on the all-you-can-eat ice cream at Penn’s Landing.
Over 20,000 people came out for the event, which helped raised close to $100,000 for pediatric leukemia research at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
Popular ice cream manufacturers including Bassetts, Turkey Hill, Jack & Jill, Philadelphia Water Ice Factory, Breyers, Benn & Jerry’s, Haagen-Dazs, Starbucks and Edy’s all offered up their products free of charge.
First started by Jeffrey and Michelle Kahan, of Voorhees, N.J., the holiday weekend marked the 12th annual “Super Scooper” event. The Kahans created the fundraiser after their son Joshua died in 1997, just before his third birthday.
Joshua loved fire engines, ice cream and wearing baseball caps backwards.
Over the last twelve years, the Joshua Kahan Fund has raised more than $1.5 million to endow a Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia research chair focused on childhood leukemia.
