It's Dragon Boat Time on the Schuylkill

Independence Dragon Boat Regatta returns to the Schuylkill River

The Philadelphia Dragon Boat Association will host its Fourth Annual Independence Dragon Boat Regatta on Saturday along the Kelly Drive.

This event has attracted thousands of participants and spectators because of its festive atmosphere, which features local artists, musicians and tented picnic areas for each team along the riverfront.

Wondering what a dragon boat is? It's a human-powered long boat where boaters row in unison to a drum beat.

During this daylong event, more than 70 teams ranging from novice to experienced will compete in a multiple 500-meter races. All proceeds during this event will benefit several local charities.

Keep an eye out for the NBC 10 Fighting Peacocks lead by our own reporter Doug Shimell.

Rain or shine the first race takes place at 8:00 a.m.
