Various services and events will take place in the area celebrating the 25th Anniversay of the Martin Luther King Holiday. Here are a few notable events in the area.
A city-wide opening ceremony will take place at Girard College at 9 a.m.
South Philadelphia High School will have a “King Day of Service.” Murals will be painted and a discussion on race and ethnicity will take place.
The Citizens Bank Foundation donated $25000 to the African American Museum in Philadelphia. The museum plans a full day of events to help commemorate the holiday.
A National Bell Ringing ceremony will take place at the Liberty Bell Center on 6th and Arch at 12:15 p.m. Mayor Michael Nutter will attend.
The University of Pennsylvania will hold a day of service starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers will participate in various service projects from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on campus and throughout the West Philadelphia community.
In Wilmington, the City Council and St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church are sponsoring a march for non-violence and racial harmony beginning at 1 p.m. on 4th and Jackson streets.
The National Liberty Museum in Old City will have free activities highlighting the life of Dr. King. The activities include a tour, a civil rights scavenger hunt and various exhibits.
