Lighting Up the South Street Bridge

After much delay, the South Street Bridge will finally hold its lighting ceremony Monday at 9:00 p.m.

Anyone driving along I-76 at night could tell you that the lights have been on the South Street Bridge for months but on Monday night officials will officially unveil the bright, new look.

Mayor Michael Nutter and other officials will host a light show in dedication to the reconstruction of the new and improved South Street Bridge.

Nutter and friends will view the show from Weave Bridge on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus. The festivities will start at 9:00 p.m. Monday.

The South Street Bridge implemented a LED light system that experienced technical problems for the past few months. Testing of the lights in December of 2011 and May of 2012 has caused a bit of anxiousness, but the lights will finally officially illuminate the night in University City.

Head down to Weave Bridge in Penn Park, the Walnut Street Bridge, the Schuylkill River Park or a local roof deck to see exactly what these new lights can do.
