A New "Twist" on an Old Record

Help Chubby Checker set "The Twist" world record Friday at City Hall

It's Twistory -- 50 Years of the Twist

Chubby Checker shows NBCPhiladelphia's Dawn Timmeney how to groove.

Philly's own Checker is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his "Twist" by trying to break the Guiness Book of World Records record for people doing "The Twist." Get over to City Hall at noon Friday to join the fun. (Published Thursday, July 8, 2010)

Kick off your weekend with a “Twist.”

Join Chubby Checker and Mayor Michael Nutter as they attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most people doing “The Twist” at the same time on Friday.

The number to beat is 1,691 -- set by students and staff from two high schools in the United Kingdom (easy!).

Chubby -- a Philly native -- first performed the popular dance move 50 years ago this month at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, N.J.

The Philadelphia Daily News is hosting Chubby for a free concert at City Hall to commemorate the milestone.

The concert will be held at the Dilworth Plaza at City Hall from noon to 12:45 p.m.

Get there early to be part of the first 2,500 people to get a free T-shirt.

One lucky concertgoer will get to twist with Chubby on stage.

Even if you don't get the chance to Twist on stage you can still meet the man himself -- Chubby will sign autographs following the concert. Maybe he will even do a quick Twist with you if you ask.
